Final Exam Project Post

There was only one new thing I did and I learned how to make fins on something. You can extend the object’s vertices and if you do two of them at the same time it can extend a flat surface off of the object. Then you take the knife tool and you cut out a shape that makes it look like fins.

I showed that I know how to make a model in Blender and what to do to make it. Like extending the faces of the object to make it bigger. And I also added fins which I now know how to do.

I learned the skills I needed by just trying them myself and maybe from a few videos, like this one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljl_QFs9xhE. Another video I learned from is this one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIoXOplUvAw. That one taught me a lot about how to use the basics in Blender.

The project went okay, but it wasn’t want I really wanted to make. I wanted to make a dragon, but I ended up making a sea serpent instead. Thankfully sea serpents and dragons look similar, so I sort of accomplished what I wanted to do from the beginning.

I would continue this because I think this project was fun and I would like to see if I could actually make a dragon instead of a sea serpent. I would do it by erasing the big tail and then trying to figure out how to make a body. Then I would add legs and maybe wings too.

I enjoyed all the activities we did in class. One thing I think should be changed though is the class should have a big project and continue with it the whole year. Maybe have one or two small projects in between, but the rest is a big project. But the way it is now isn’t that bad. I think this class was cool and fun.

Last Blog Post for Quarter 4

I decided to change the project I was working on because I just couldn’t figure out how to animate it. That was the main reason I was still working on it, but since I couldn’t figure out how to do it, I changed projects. I tried making some sort of weird animal, but I’m not really sure what animal it is.

What I want to accomplish more with this project is making it more realistic. I hope to continue this project and maybe make it so that it looks a little less blocky.

I had a lot of fun doing this project and I hope to finish it more eventually. The best part about making it was the face. The face was pretty fun to do and I’m planning on adding more details later on.

2nd Blog Post for 3rd Quarter

Explain the progress you made since the last post. Give specific examples of how the project has progressed in the last two weeks.

I haven’t made much progress, but I’m at least done with the character model completely. I still have to add bones to the model, and I’m hoping to do that by the end of the marking period. I actually have added some bones to the left arm, but other than that I haven’t added anything yet. It seems pretty easy to do thankfully, so I’m hoping that I’ll be able to finish that fast.

What are your goals to reach by March 25?

I plan to make the whole body have bones and be animated by that time. I’m really hoping I’ll be able to do that because that would be a great learning experience to know how to animate. I’m going to have trouble with the face though because I don’t know if I can animate it.

Blog Post 5

I am using the software program called Blender. It’s a program that lets you make 3D objects and also lets you animate them. You can also make models for games and port the models to different software programs so that you can put them in a game. I chose Blender because I know how to use it and I’m pretty good at using it now.

I have accomplished a lot in my opinion. I finished the model of my character and I think it looks pretty good. I also learned more of the controls in Blender so now I can use it more efficiently. Below is the full model.

The way I learned how to do it is by using tutorials online. The tutorial I watched was how to make a low poly character in Blender. I also just started trying to learn it on my own and in my opinion I think I did a pretty good job. The arms are a bit big though.

One of the things I added that wasn’t in the tutorial were eyes. I just added the eyes because I thought it would be a little funny.

My overall plan for telling a story for this project is to either animate the model or just tell a story in written form. If I animate it, I’m planning on having him meet another character (I’ll probably copy the current model I have and change it a little bit.). He’ll shake hands with the other character he meets, and then they’ll talk about something. Blender supports animation, so that’s what I’ll use to animate it.

The next steps for my project are to figure out how to get my character model’s joints moving. Right now they don’t move, but I’m going to look up tutorials on how to add bones, and hopefully, I’m able to do it. I’m hoping in the next week or so I’ll have that done. Preferably this week, but it will probably end up being next week.

Toy Action Figure

Explain what you chose to make for your exam project and why you chose it.

Stephen and I had already started making a 3D model from another project we were doing, so we decided to make it into an action figure for a child between the age of 5-10. We decided to add a body to it because it was just a head before.

Talk about 2 specific challenges you faced and how you overcame them.

One of the problems Stephen and I faced was exporting Tinkercad STL. files from Stephen’s computer and getting them to my computer. There was also the problem of smoothing out the Tinkercad models in Blender. The way we fixed the first issue was to email each other the files to each other using Gmail. Then there was the issue with smoothing out the Tinkercad models. We fixed this by subdividing them in Blender and then using the sculpt mode to make it more smooth.

What was your favorite part of this design? Why did you enjoy that part?

My favorite part of the design was making the face. I liked how it turned out and I think it looks pretty good. The face took the longest to make and I feel like it’s the most detailed. The hair on the head is a little messy, but that’s okay because I sort of wanted it to look like that.

What program did you choose to use for design? Talk about how your skills have changed this semester.

Both me and Stephen used Blender, but Stephen also used Tinkercad. I was the one who used Blender the most though. Stephen would make some of the materials I needed to finish the design and then I would fix it in Blender. My skill with using Blender has definitely improved throughout the year and I hope I get even better at using it in the future.

Choice Project

The project I am working on is a funny model of one of my friends.

Here is what the project looks like

I have been working on it with my friend Stephen, and we are working well together. I chose this project because I thought it would be fun, and also, if my friend that I’m sort of basing it on sees it, he’ll think it’s funny. I also asked him if he’d be okay if I did this, and he told me that it’s fine as long as I don’t put his name on it.

One thing I have learned from this project is how to cooperate with someone on a computer project. Another thing I have learned is how to use Blender. The last thing I have learned is how to import and export models into places like Blender or Gmail. One obstacle that I have faced is how to combine items in Blender. Thankfully, I have learned how to combine items by looking up the information online. I am hoping to figure out more about Blender in the future. I’m also hoping to continue this project and keep working on it throughout the year. I’m also hoping that I’ll make a VR game at some point.

I’m also going to use this funny model of my friend for my exam, but it’s going to be changed so that you can add accessories to it. One of those items will be the glasses. The glasses will be for the exam because they will be an attachable accessory. It will also, of course, be for my choice project too, but I’m going to try to make it separate for the exam, so it’s an accessory.

Ornament Project

I decided to do an ornament of The Legend of Zelda and it was of one of the pots from the game. I thought that would be good to do because I like The Legend of Zelda. The first thing I did to make it was I went into Fusion 360 and I figured out how to use the software. When I did that, I placed a sphere and I tried making the top of the pot which looked like a torus. Making a torus didn’t really work, but I thought it would be good enough. Then I put a hole all the way through the torus, which will be where I put a string to hang it on my Christmas tree. I then put a hole in the middle of the sphere, so that it would be somewhat hollow on the inside. After that, I was ready to print it. When it was finished printing it didn’t look very good. It didn’t print the torus part right and it was very small. I decided I had time to redo it, so I went back into Fusion 360 and started to look for a torus on Fusion 360 instead of making it from scratch. I actually did find a torus and I placed it on top of my sphere. I unfortunately couldn’t get rid of the old torus for some reason, so I just tried hiding it with the new torus. It kind of worked, so I printed it. When it was done it was really big, but everything else about it was good. Next time I do this though I’ll have to make it smaller. Now, since the print looked good, I brought it home and painted it. Here’s what the painted print looks like.

Introduction

My name is Devin and I am in 12th grade. My goals after high school are to create games and hopefully make them good so that I can earn enough money to make more games. The reason I took science for inventors is that I wanted to learn how to make a VR game. What I want to get out of this class is enough knowledge about how to make a game, so when I start making more games I’ll know how. I’m looking forward to finishing a VR game and seeing what it looks like. One of my strengths is I’m good with computers and another strength I have is I’m able to learn fairly quickly. These will help me because I’ll be able to learn and use the programs easier. The VR game I’m hoping to make is a dinosaur game and you will be able to place dinosaurs in an environment and look at them. The biggest challenge I think I’ll have in this class is figuring out how to finish my VR game.
